Democracy is Indigenous – Expanding the NUIFC for the 2020 Election
Hello Friends, Partners, and Members,
Fall is just around the corner and the biggest election of our lifetime is now less than 100 days away. The proposed end of the Census is now less than 60 days away. The combined impact of the Census and the election on the health and well-being of all Native people will determine not only how are counted but also how districts are drawn and who will represent us in those districts.
What we know: We know that the Native Vote can represent the swing vote in countless cities across the United States and we know that being counted in the Census is critically important. To this end, the NUIFC is excited to announce the addition of the Tucson Indian Center, Native American Community Development Institute (Minneapolis), North American Indian Center of Detroit, and the American Indian of Center of Houston to our Democracy is Indigenous cohort. Each of these organizations operate as a positive transformational force in their communities and we’re thrilled to welcome each into the fold and begin our important work together.
While we continue to invest into local community organizations, the NUIFC is also expanding our national footprint by partnering with the National Council of Urban Indian Health (NCUIH) for our current civic engagement endeavor. This collaboration unites two urban specific national organizations and extends our collective geographic reach to ensure Urban Native communities are voting and participating in the Census. To learn more about this partnership, take a look at our press release announcing the partnership.
We’re also bolstering our voting infrastructure by partnering with When We All Vote and National Voter Registration Day to better position our cohort to register as many new voters as possible.
Forming partnerships is the bedrock of what the NUIFC does and why we are well-positioned to have a historic 2020. Lastly, be on the lookout for Democracy is Indigenous materials, including handouts, posters, t-shirts, videos, and more. Please take a look at our website to learn more.
